Thor: Ragnarok (2/10)

by Tony Medley

Runtime 130 minutes.

PG-13

Maybe every other American movie shouldn't be based on a comic book. Other countries will think Americans live in an infantile fantasy land where reality is whatever we say it is and every problem can be solved with violence. Bill Maher

This movie, and all the rest of the Marvel Superhero movies, is a monument to American entertainment’s devotion to nonsensical movies aimed at the intellect of a subnormal 13 year old boy. This film is so absurd and contrary to any notion of intelligent story-telling in movies that stimulate the brain that it doesn’t deserve anything more than what’s written here.

But I’ll go on anyway. This is obviously intended to be a comedy that doesn’t take itself seriously. My question is how could anybody ever take any of these imbecilic Superhero movies seriously? This one has nothing in it but special effects, most of which are unbelievable, and I do not use that word as a compliment. For instance, when it finally lost me irrevocably is when the protagonists are being chased through the air on their airships by other airships. They are travelling at enormous speeds. One of them (who does not have the superhero power of flight) gets out of her ship and jumps through the air from her ship to one of the pursuing ships. They are travelling at what appears to be warp speed. Everything that came before had been absurd but for some reason this just really did it for me. How can people with fully matured brains sit for more than two hours and watch stuff like this over and over and over again? There is not even a scintilla of tension.

The film is full of violence, even though it’s intended to be a comedy. But Thor (Chris Hemsworth) takes it all with a smile, even when he’s faced with violent death time after time. He takes a beating every time and still comes up ticking.

The bad guy is Cate Blanchett. Words fail me that someone who thinks she’s a premier actress would spend time in junk like this. But money is money and that’s what drives Hollywood and most of its inhabitants. So we get more of this drivel and no more All About Eves.
