Live Free or Die Hard (8/10)

by Tony Medley

When you go see Bruce Willis in a Die Hard movie, you know what you’re going to get, an indestructible hero, John McClane (Willis), who is going to get the bejesus kicked out of him, will escape from innumerable impossible situations, will always have a smile and wisecrack when things look darkest, and will prevail in the end.

That’s what you get here as Gabriel (Timothy Olyphant) is the fiendish psychopath taking over the computers that control all the services in the eastern U.S., shutting down traffic and power and causing pandemonium. McClane picks up Justin Long (Matt Farrell), a scruffy computer geek whom Gabriel is trying to kill. As you would guess, the fate of the United States rests on the shoulders of McClane and Long.

What follows is an enjoyable 129-minute adventure full of action and stunts and fun. Lots of people get killed by lots of bad guys. McClane gets bloodied. His beautiful daughter, Lucy (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), gets kidnapped. Everything goes from bad to worse. But McClane keeps coming...and joking.

I had a great time.
